    About DCIS

Many women will get diagnosed with the type of cancer I had, DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ), and have nothing to fear in terms of cancer.  Why?  Does that not make sense?

Well, it’s important to know that DCIS is a noninvasive cancer that is confined to the milk ducts and for many, it never becomes life threatening cancer.  As you all know by now, I was in the 25-50% of cases where it becomes “invasive” or in other words mutates into cancer and breaks out of the milk duct walls.

DCIS does not typically create a large cluster of cells, so no lump will be found most times.  Regular mammograms are what will pick up the presence of DCIS and further testing is what will rule out it being invasive cancer.  For me, my DCIS was so extensive that it spread to two quadrants or half my left breast.  Lucky for me, it stopped there…my nodes came back clean, so removal of my breast is hoped to have removed all the cancer in my body.  I opted to have the right breast removed to just safeguard my body and for peace of mind.

For others with less presence of DCIS, lumpectomy can be the appropriate procedure to preserve the breast…and it may be followed up with some radiation to destroy stray DCIS cells.
