Off to Florida we go
As the possibility of my having cancer hung in the rafters for more than a month, we needed to decide if we cancel our annual Easter trip to Florida. I had mentioned the plans to my doctor to which she smiled and “Go and have a great time”. Just plan to come back ready for surgery…a chance to get away from it all, be with the family and some sun and tan before surgery, I’ll take that!
So off we went. Two daughters in strollers excited to “go swimming”. Bruce and I acting like a spring break week before finals..ok, not too different than any other trip or day in the Ennis life style :) We spent glorious days with my godfather, day trips to various sights including an amazing mermaid underwater show, feasts of meals and all around a fantastic get away. We attended Easter mass along with 2,000 other people for a touching sermon delivery, filled with an abundance of insights. Easter is a new beginning, and this is my new beginning kept ringing in my head.
Tough was the very last day when I had to tell my godfather the news of my diagnosis. Here a man that was virutally a grandfather to me, held me on my christening day 37 years ago, had to hear cancer walked in our lives.
I kept opening my mouth, and for the first time, I could not get the words out…and just tears came.
With Bruce’s help, the news was delivered and in the most endearing response, I was comforted by him saying “I’m so sorry, but you’ll be fine and really have nothing to worry about.” We sat there with the difference of 50 years of age .. me 37, he 87 ..and I loved that he too knew in his heart, all will be just fine. It will be, I don’t take no for an answer!
